Bob Menendez, full name Robert Menendez, is an American politician who was appointed as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate from New Jersey in 2006 and later won re-election to that body. He was born on January 1, 1954, in New York, New York. From 1993 until 2006, he was a member of the US House of Representatives. Menendez was twice charged with federal corruption and bribery offenses.

He grew up in a Union City apartment after the family moved to New Jersey. Early political career
Charged on federal corruption charges in 2015, Menendez has been accused of failing to reveal several gifts from a political a contributor on whose behalf he allegedly lobbied various government organizations. His trial started in September 2017, and two months later, when the jury was unable to agree on a conviction, it was declared a mistrial. The Department of Justice declared in January 2018 that it will not retry Menendez. The Senate Ethics Committee “severely admonished” Menendez three months later and required him to “repay the fair market value of all impermissible gifts not already repaid.” He won reelection to the Senate for a third time in November 2018.
When he and his third wife, Nadine Menendez, were federally indicted on bribery allegations in September 2023, it put Menendez in the spotlight once more. The claims claimed that the senator had secretly benefited the Egyptian government. According to the accusation, Menendez collected “cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value.”
